Members of the family of four children nearly hit by a powerful firework are sending a strong message to the man police arrested for the crime.

Police arrested 26-year-old Joel McCoy, they believe he he tossed a firecracker from a car and it exploded, close to several children. A grandmother of some of those children is telling McCoy he needs to grow up.

"I thought he was drunk that day he went doing that," said a mother of one child.

"No excuse. No excuse. Alcohol is no excuse," said the grandmother.

Both asked FOX23's Dontaye Carter not to show their faces. However, they did want to express how they're feeling about what happened.

"It was so immature of him to do that because my grandchildren play out in this yard," said the grandmother. "I think it was very irresponsible of him to do that."

Sand Springs police said it happened Tuesday near 4th and Industrial when four children, as young as 2, and no older than 9, were playing in a front yard. Officers said an M-150 firecracker exploded near the children.

The arrest report said when McCoy was pulled over, officer found a small amount of marijuana, a digital scale and two M-150 firecrackers.

"It's more anger if a 26-year-old man going around throwing firecrackers out of his vehicle," said the grandmother.

"I was just trying to have fun. It was very childish of me, because I'm 26 years old. I know better. But I didn't think better," said McCoy.

FOX23 tracked down McCoy Thursday afternoon. He said he wasn't trying to hit the children
but was throwing it on the street, but it shot in the direction of the kids.

"Made a bad decision. I'm just lucky, glad, and fortunate, it didn't hurt anyone," he said.

FOX23 looked into how dangerous M-150s can be and found people have lost fingers using the M-150 firecracker.
