School starts Tuesday for the Sand Springs school district and crews worked Friday to install magnetic doors.  They'll be triggered to close and lock, with the push of a button in the office.

Charles Page High School Principal Stan Trout says law enforcement told him it would take them two minutes to get on campus, in the event of an armed intruder.  He also tells FOX23 News, the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy late last year in Connecticut forced all schools to take a closer look at how they are equipped to protect students and staff.

The new doors will buy more time.  If an intruder was armed with automatic weapons, they could shoot their way past them.  However, someone in the office is monitoring the entrances, through video surveillance.  If a threat is identified, they can trigger the doors to close and lock, with the push of a button.

This year another change students at Charles Page High School will find, is that they won't be able to come and go from various doors.  Two main entrances will be unlocked, and they are monitored with video surveillance.  All students and staff must use one of the main entrances this year.  All other exterior doors will be locked.

We questioned Mr. Trout about how these security improvements are being paid for.  He tells FOX23 News it's possible thanks to a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, and a district-wide bond issue.

The doors won't be in place when school starts on Tuesday, but Trout says they should be up by Labor Day.
