This weekend thieves broke into sheds at River City Parks in Sand Springs and stole sporting equipment.
The stolen equipment taken from the park near Highway 412 included expensive items owned by the Sand Springs BMX club.
“This is the worst we've ever had,” said Roy Klein, the Sand Springs BMX track operator.
The BMX track has been burglarized before; the concession stand is a frequent target for thieves.
But last weekend someone stole much more than a few candy bars.
"We found out that they had cut the lock off the gates and gone into the container," said Klein.
Thieves took two bikes, an air compressor, gas, a control box and a leaf blower; the stolen items were valued at about $3,500.
"Without those items there is no way to come down and perform actual BMX races and that's how we make our money -- through races,” said Klein.
The BMX club wasn't the only group hit at the park. Sand Springs police told FOX23 this weekend someone had their tablet and tools stolen from their car, the lock on the softball club's shed was also broken and someone stole the gas inside the shed.
For now the BMX track will remain closed until the club can raise money to replace the stolen equipment, meaning there will be many disappointed children.
"It's sad that someone would stoop so low and take away from little kids when we do it for the love of it," said Klein.
The Sand Springs deputy chief said police regularly patrol the park.
