For the first time in the Williams Route 66 Marathon’s seven year history, the marathon and half marathon have sold out.
The half marathon reached capacity on Oct. 21 and the marathon reached capacity on Oct. 30, over two and a half weeks before race day which is Nov. 18, 2012 in Tulsa, Okla.
“This is a considerable milestone,” said Chris Lieberman, executive director of Tulsa Route 66 Marathon Inc. “We had 3,000 runners and walkers that first year and to see how far we’ve come is exciting. It’s a testament to all of the hard work invested by so many people to make this one of the best races in the country.”
The current runners signed up for the race break down like this:
- marathon (sold out) – 2,250
- half marathon (sold out) – 4,500
- relay (three- to five-person teams) – 1,000 people registered with 47 team slots available
- 5K – over 1,200
- fun run and walk – over 500 registered with a cap of 750.
Organizers predict all events will sell out with a total of 10,500 participants across all five races.
“Of course we’re thrilled to have so many people, both local and from out-of-state, signed up to run or walk, but we also know those who didn’t sign up in time may be disappointed,” Lieberman said. “It’s really an entire weekend of events, from the expo on Friday through the post-race party, so I encourage people to sign up for the 5K or the fun run and walk, or consider volunteering. There are many fun opportunities to help us put on this great event.”
