NEW YORK (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the Washington Redskins nickname has been "presented in a way that honors Native Americans."

Goodell said Friday at his annual pre-Super Bowl news conference that he's been talking to Native American leaders in the past year. But he says the vast majority of Americans in general and Native Americans in particular support the franchise keeping the nickname.

Asked if the term was appropriate to refer to a Native American, Goodell said, "This is the name of a football team."

Native American imagery usage has been banned throughout mainstream. 2 Examples are No Doubt's music video, "Looking Hot", and the usage of a head dress for November's Victoria's Secret show in 2012. Yet for a Chanel show in Dallas last year, there were plenty native american imagery, and so was in a Nelly Furtado video, "Big Hoops" and Lana Del Rey in a headdress have been used (and not yet made to take down as publicity/merchandise. There's a big conversation to be had about this... it IS bigger than just a few opinions... and there needs to be a consensus about using Native American imagery in mainstream. On the other hand, we all know Redskin was a derogatory term made to define the Natives. Just like "ni99er" was to define the Africans/slaves. We wouldn't not name a football team the "Ni99ers" or the "Wetbacks" or any other offensive (former, or present) word, why is "Redskin" the exception? -Raul Flores
