The Oklahoma Department of Transportation urges drivers to stay cautious because slick spots remain throughout the state, particularly on highway bridges, overpasses and highway exit/entrance ramps.

Continued low temperatures can cause wet or slushy areas of roadways to refreeze causing a thin layer of ice, also know as black ice. Drivers should plan trips ahead and allow extra time to reach destinations.

Highway crews are continuing to work to address areas and apply salt and sand.

ODOT is alert and ready to respond to anticipated additional precipitation and continued winter weather conditions.

During snow and/or ice conditions, motorists are asked to:
  • Check road conditions before getting out on the roads.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles, so there is adequate distance for braking in wet and icy conditions.
  • Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway, but is actually a thin layer of ice.
  • Stay at least 200 feet behind road-clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
If drivers must travel out of state, they are urged to check area road conditions before heading out. Reportedly, conditions in Arkansas and Texas remain slick and hazardous.
