Surveillance upgrades at QuikTrip are making it easier for police to catch thieves.

More and more thieves walk in, grab a pack of beer and slip out a front or side door. Some seem to know to avoid a few cameras, but they don't know just how many times their face is caught on camera in just these few short steps.

"Witnessed it firsthand with my granddaughter just the other day," said Robert Boshuizen, a customer.

Boshuizen was surprised at what he saw in broad daylight.

"Just pulled in, two young men ran out with beer under their arms, and we were like, 'ew, that's interesting,'" he said.

Just last week 45-year-old James Davis III was arrested for repeatedly stealing beer from several QT locations. Surveillance pictures tied him to close to a dozen larcenies so far and investigators are still working on proving dozens more.

"People think they're getting away with it, and they're really not. We just haven't caught up to them yet. We've got their surveillance, we've got the technologies, and we're identifying them," said Maj. Shannon Clark with the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office.

"They've taken eight, nine guys off the streets that we know have stolen probably about 80, 90 times from us. Who knows how many times they've stolen from anybody else," said Mike Thornbrugh, a spokesman for QuikTrip Corporation.

Thornbrugh wouldn't share details of the security upgrades, but said surveillance is far more advanced that thieves realize. They even have facial recognition software that helps them find all the times a thief strikes. From there law enforcement can use similar software to identify the person.

"By the arrests that are going on and the convictions that are going on, we know it's working," said Thrornbrugh.

Boshuizen said he just hopes the rest of the thieves out there figure out they won't get away with it.

"It kind of sets you back a little bit, but, you know, unfortunately it's the day and age we live in," he said.

James Davis III is being held on $44,000 bond for 11 counts of larceny from a retailer, but detectives and QT are still finding surveillance pictures of him committing more. They think he could be responsible for as many as 40.
