An internet based company is using a phone number with area code 918 to lure Oklahomans into a potential money scam. However, one Bartlesville man wouldn’t take the bait.
"They promise you that you are going to get gift cards,” said Melvin Nichols.
When the FOX23 News viewer alerted FOX23’s Abbie Alford about a number that appeared to be made from Owasso he found the company was based out of Nevada with a bad track record from the Better Business Bureau.
When Nichols received six calls from a phone number (918) 928-2184 he would hang up.
"When they called back I said I don't know anything about a survey," said Nichols. "On the seventh time I was close to a computer because you had to use a computer to do this."
Mr. Nichols says he knew it was ruse but the woman on the phone sounded real.
"She is the one prompting you in this deceiving voice,” said Nichols.
When FOX23 News called the phone number it sounded like a woman answered the call.
“Hi my name is Sylvia. I’m with Waka Savings. I'm calling about the online survey that you recently participated
in. How are you today?"
However, when FOX23’s Abbie Alford said she didn’t call "Sylvia", the automated woman on the other end
“Okay, thank you for your time. You have a nice day."
Mr. Nichols says the company makes big promises but he hung up once "Sylvia" asked him to enter his
personal information and credit card information.
"You were called to receive your gift cards for your participation and online survey. $100 in gas vouchers
and a $50 Waka gift card and $10 Walmart gift card are yours to claim," said the automated customer service message.
After getting through the automated customer service line a real person answered the phone.
"The processing fee is $2.99 with that customers can get a $10 Walmart gift card and gas voucher and $50 credit on the Waka Network account," said the woman who agreed to be recorded.
However, the call ended shortly after FOX23 questioned the company’s practices and whether they were
offereing a win upon a processing fee, which in Nevada is illegal.
The call then was put on hold and no picked up.
The Better Business Bureau graded Waka Network aka Easy Scripts, Inc out of Henderson, Nevada a F.
There were 116 complaints listed against the company. The Better Business Bureau in Nevada said there
were several complaints unresolved including not refunding customers as promised.
"If the company is ignoring and not addressing the issues, yeah that's a problem," said BBB Operations
Manager in Nevada Rhonda Mettler.
She says internet based companies could be in a virtual office and using an area code 918 is not illegal if the
office is not in Oklahoma.
“No there isn't. Not at all. It's always good to be transparent," said Mettler.
When calling Wakanetwork’s customers service line you can be taken off the call list. You can also place
your number on the National Do Not Call Registry on its website or by calling 888-382-1222 from the phone you wish to register.
You can also file a complaint with the BBB.
