A Tulsa man is behind bars after police say he made obscene phone calls to local hospital. Kevin Shelman has turned himself in after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On April 8th, a hospital worker at Hillcrest answered 5 to 6 phone calls allegedly made by Shelman. The worker told police it sounded like he had been drinking and was making outrageous statements about having sex with children.
FOX23 visited Marion Shelman, Kevin’s mother, at her retirement home to talk about Kevin and his alleged obscene phone calls.
"I've told him that it was wrong and he should not do it and he said Momma, I will never do it again,” says Marion.
But police say he didn’t stop and continued calling hospitals like Saint Francis and Hillcrest. After telling the person on the other line that he was having sex with kids, police say he would hang up and then call back.
"He was drinking and he got on the phone and that's when it started, and to this day he doesn't remember everything he said,” says Marion.
After hospital workers reported the phone calls to police, Kevin Shelman was arrested on April 8th. However, the phone calls still didn’t stop after he got out of jail.
"I’ve had to pay my lawyer for it and I gave him almost $2,000 to handle the case,” she says.
For Marion, she doesn’t understand why Kevin is doing this.
Police tell FOX23 that during one of the phone calls, Kevin told the hospital worker he was having sex with a 9 year old girl at Hicks Park and that she wanted to.
Although her son graduated from high school with a special education diploma, Marion says he knows right from wrong and has never hurt a child.
"He has never bothered anybody. I can honestly say that,” says Marion.
Neighbors say Kevin drank a lot and that may be partially to blame for his actions.
"I know he did a lot of drinking and I know he was drinking when he did it that day,” says his neighbor Charlie.
Kevin Shelman’s bail is currently set at $14,500. He is charged with six counts of making obscene phone calls that includes four charges filed last year.
