An Oklahoma state senator wants law-abiding Oklahomans to be able to carry a gun without a license.

The bill, called the Piers Morgan Act, after the CNN host who has strong beliefs about gun control, would let anyone 18 or older openly carry loaded or unloaded shotguns, rifles and pistols without a license.

The bill would still allow for a handgun permit which would allow Oklahomans to legally carry in other states.

Our FOX23 team went to Broken Arrow to hear the public's reaction to the new gun bill and it's surprising name choice.

An Oklahoma senator is proposing a bill that would make Oklahoma a ‘constitutional carry state.’

That means there would be no permit requirements for citizens over 18 to carry firearms.

Right now, it's the bill's name that's getting all the attention.

The bill would put requirements for carrying a gun basically at a bare minimum.

The senator responsible for naming the bill admitted he was being a bit facetious when he named it after Piers Morgan.

FOX23 spoke with Sen. Nathan Dahms, who laughs at the reaction the public has given after hearing what he named his bill.

Dahms explained, “It’s ironic and I’m kind of amused by it, kind of an oxymoron, actually," he said.

The people FOX23 talked to got a good laugh out of Dahm's decision to name his Second Amendment bill after Piers Morgan.

“I think it's pretty funny. I think it's definitely got people's attention," one Broken Arrow resident said.

The bill is getting attention because of its namesake almost immediately.

Morgan practically challenged Dahm to a duel on his show Monday night.

Dahm says he didn't really know what to expect when he picked the name, "I didn't know exactly what his response would be. I thought there might be some sort of response, but I didn't expect him to respond so quickly."

All jokes about the title aside, this is a law that would significantly change the gun restrictions in Oklahoma.

Some are sure to call it extreme.

We asked the senator if he agreed.

"'Shall not be infringed upon' is, in my opinion, not that radical a concept. So trying to get in line with the Second Amendment is not radical in my view," said Dahm.

Dahm also said the requirements to get a permit are hoops law-abiding people shouldn't have to jump through.

If his bill garners the support it needs, you won't have to get a permit anymore.

"The age would also be lowered to 18 and above," said Dahm.

FOX23 asked, “So no background checks?"

Dahm replied, "Correct."

Please remember that background checks are required to purchase weapons through most channels. A point missed by the fox people and perhaps slightly misleading. A right to both "keep" and "bear" is clearly stated with no qualifiers. No where does it state that they must be "Feinstein-approved".

well...considering felons can't own/possess a firearm period...i think your first point is invalid. Though i completely agree with your last two points

Personally I think this would be a good idea with certain provisions/restrictions...A: NO FELONS B: Must pass a firearms safety course C: No documented mental disorders

The irony is, it used to be legal until the legislature made it "legal with a permit". Same as open carry, there never was a law forbidding open carry until we "legalized" it.
