Area pharmacies are ramping up security measures to keep prescription drugs out of the wrong hands.

“People will do just about anything to get their hands on prescription drugs,” said Pharmacist Chris Schiller.

As the owner of Economy Pharmacy, Schiller has put numerous safety measures in place to make sure that customers and staff are safe and secure. Schiller says surveillance cameras, alarm systems and a security officer are all preventative measures.

“In this case I think that prevention is the best medicine,” said Schiller.

David Haynes is the security officer on duty at the pharmacy to add an extra layer of surveillance and safety.

“The main objective here is to prevent robbery and to protect the employees and the customers,” said Lt. Haynes.

The Public Information Officer with Tulsa Police Department tells FOX23 pain medications, like Oxycodone, are frequently sought after and stolen from homes and businesses. TPD says having a security presence in the parking lot or inside of a store can be a crime deterrent.

Schiller says preventative measures can continue inside of the home. If a person has prescribed pain medications in the home he says that it is a good idea to keep that information to yourself. Schiller also suggests storing medications in locations other than the medicine cabinet.

“A lock box is probably the best thing that you can do and that’s not that uncommon,” said Schiller, “You want to put your medications up and away.”
