The search is on for a thief in Owasso after 45 vials of drugs were stolen from six ambulances.

Police told FOX23’s Sharon Phillips they think the theft may have been an inside job. Law requires ambulances to keep all narcotics locked behind two locks. Police believe the thief knew that.

Every ambulance in Owasso is stocked with medicine like Morphine, Valium and Fentanyl. The drugs are used to manage the pain of patients in need. But EMS Director Brian Cook says if they wind up in the wrong hands, it could be a deadly situation.

"Our paramedics know how to use those drugs and they are trained to use those drugs and in the wrong hands, it could be fatal," Cook told FOX23.

Whoever took the drugs did it quick and made off with the pain killers, muscle relaxers and sedatives without being seen. The facility does not have security cameras. Cook says it was around 11 on Tuesday night when they first noticed the drugs were missing.

A paramedic says he was sitting in the back of the ambulance when he heard the door rattling. He looked up and saw all the drugs were gone."

The Owasso Police department is looking at all possible scenarios, even questioning employees.

The Owasso police officer that took the report says they do have a polygraph test and they are certified to use it, so that may be an option. Several agencies are involved in this investigation including the Drug Enforcement Agency, Bureau of Narcotics and the Owasso Police Department.

FOX23 found the street value of the 45 vials of narcotics that were stolen adds up to close to $10,000.
