The Owasso High School assistant football coach, J.J. Dossett coached his last game Friday night against the Union Redskins before he deploys to Afghanistan on Sunday.
Sgt. Dossett is a part of the 219 Engineering and Installation Squadron for the Oklahoma Air National Guard. He enlisted ten years ago, after he graduated from Owasso High School.
He has been on two tours before; the most recent was two years ago when he was deployed to Iraq. His youngest son, Kash, was born while he was overseas. Now, he will be gone another eight months.
“I tell my oldest son who is four, that I am going to be a bear for a little while and hibernate through the winter,” said Sgt. Dossett.
It’s his “other” children though who have a real understanding that he is fighting for their freedoms in America—his players.
“Yay, I’m going to miss coach,” said senior, wide receiver Samory Collier. “He is a blessing to me and a blessing to all the wide receivers.”
The whole team took coach Dossett to breakfast Friday morning before the game against Union. They gave him a t-shirt with all their names signed on it.
“It’ll bother me more than it’ll bother them, well- I think they like me!” joked Coach Dossett.
“He is an understanding coach,” said Collier. “He is always there to make sure you get it done though, you know. “On Tuesday I was not giving it my all when we were blocking, and he just said, you got to get it done.”
The team won Friday night’s game 38-35. Sgt. Dossett plans for more of those when he comes back next May for spring ball.
