Meningitis victims families as well as the public gathered at Oolagah High School for World Meningitis Day. Meningitis Angels, a Houston based non profit organization put on the event. Frankie Milley founder of the Meningitis Angels wanted to further educate families about the deadly disease.
18 year old Karisa Pales, remembers Thursday March 18th very well.
" I wasn't feeling too good, I felt nauseous, and had a really bad headache and I was starting to see black I couldn't really see anything," Karisa Pales said.
Her father then took her to the hospital where she got a spinal tap,X-rays, and blood work done. Days later she found out she had meningitis.
But now, after getting her gall bladder and appendix removed, she's decided to share her story with not just people in Oologah but around the world. She's now a state team leader for the Meningitis Angels organization.
" She saw children in her community die, she saw children in her community left debilitated. Now I think it's a real honor for her to be able to step up and create more awareness and tell her story and the story of Oologah," Meningitis Angel Founder Frankie Milley said.
Oologah, a community that saw two children die, and a third Jeremiah Mitchell have to have all his limbs amputated. Hearing that reminds Karisa how precious life really is.
" I am very thankful that I am lucky, you know cause I felt I could have been to a point to where I could have died, and I am very thankful that that never happened and I'm thankful that the doctors put me on antibiotics that day," Karisa Pales said.
Next week Karisa and the Meningitis Angels will be traveling to Utah, where a new meningitis vaccine will be released.
