A man is in the hospital after an officer-involved shooting at a Motel 6 near 11th and Garnett. Tulsa police say officers shot Denny Phillips, age 32, a "person of interest" in a recent burglary of TPD homicide detective Sgt. Mike Huff's house. Authorities say Phillips was wanted on federal gun crimes.
Police say a team of officers, US Marshals and ATF agents were serving a warrant at the Motel 6 around 5:40pm Monday. They say when they stormed the motel room, Phillips ran down a breezeway, then turned and showed a gun. Two TPD officers fired shots, hitting Phillips in the lower body. He was transported in serious condition to a Tulsa hospital.
Sgt. Huff's home was burglarized on Wednesday, April 21. A Chevy pickup, guns, police badges, and family heirlooms were stolen. Phillips was listed as a person of interest in that burglary at 4pm Monday, and by 5:40pm, he had turned a gun on police at Motel 6 and they fired. No word yet if the gun Phillips pointed belonged to Huff, although police do believe it was stolen.
Tulsa police also say Phillips may have a connection to a multiple murder in Oklahoma City, back in November. A house was burned, and 4 people found murdered inside. Two of the victims were pregnant, including Brooke Phillips, a woman who appeared in HBO reality series, "Cathouse." David Tyner, of Locust Grove, is charged with six counts of murder in that case. No word on how or if he and Denny Phillips may have known each other, although both are listed on a roster of Mixed Martial Arts fighters in Oklahoma.
Phillips served time in Mayes County on a number of convictions. He had appeared in court in Mayes County as recently as March 18, 2010, on a possession of firearm charge as well as a possession with intent to manufacture a drug. He was allowed to remain free on bond until a preliminary hearing.
