The Oklahoma Highway Patrol will have all of its troopers out on the highways Thursday night, and most will be working extended shifts.

"The troopers will work tirelessly. You know, they may put in up to 18 hour days in weather like this," said Capt. George Brown.

He said it's all to keep drivers as safe as possible.

"We'll be in constant contact with ODOT officials, and we'll work with them to see which areas of the roadways need extra treatment or special attention, extra patrols," said Brown.

And while Brown said people really should stay off the roads and especially highways as much as possible, if you do have to get behind the wheel, make sure you take it slow.

"If the speed limit is posted 65 mph, and you run off the roadway, say, at 60 mph, you still will receive a citation for operating in a manner not reasonable and proper that's for the roadway conditions," said Brown. "We hear a lot of, 'But I was doing the speed limit,' or 'I was doing less than the speed limit,' and it really doesn't matter according to Oklahoma law. You must control your vehicle. It's very common for four-wheel drive pickup trucks to be in the ditch. And they're like every other vehicle. The only difference is four wheels skid instead of two."

If you do drive a pickup, Brown said make sure you weigh down the bed of it with sand bags.

He said you should not use concrete blocks or bricks or anything metal because if you do lose control or get in an accident, those things essentially become missiles.
