It could be the prescription to cure a long time problem in north Tulsa: a lack of doctors.

Next month, Westview Pediatric Care will open at 36th and MLK. This addition could help the community live longer.

Maintaining health hasn't always been a priority, instead it was more about survival.

"You've got to do whatever you've got to do," said Montoya Holmes.

Until now, that's been the only choice Holmes had. Westview just added private pediatric care, which is perfect for Holmes' 10-year-old son, Taron.

"Yeah, I could work anywhere,” said Dr. Runako Whittaker.

A few months ago, Dr. Whitaker stepped away from a practice across town.

"I just feel a part of this community. This community is part of me," said Dr. Whittaker.

"Without a car, it's very hard," said Holmes.

"You've got to call EMSA so they can come out and see your child,” said Holmes.

Whittaker said that’s the wrong prescription for a chronic problem. Holmes’ son has asthma.

Dr. Whittaker said too many people use the emergency room instead of making doctor's visits.

Her new practice is one of only two private pediatric care centers in north Tulsa. According to the Tulsa County Health Department, people who live in north Tulsa zip codes have a higher rate of death, from all causes.

"Its something that we really, really need,” said Holmes.

This service will cut travel time as it sits in the heart of north Tulsa. Now, maintaining health can become a priority.

The doors will open November 5.

Dr. Whittaker said they will accept all major insurances as well as patients who don't have insurance.
