FOX23 learned Tuesday that the Oakhurst Fire Department will not reopen. The fire board ruled that it was time for the department to call it quits and locked the doors Monday.

Neighborhood residents have mixed feelings about the decision. Some said they feel safer with full-time fire departments responding to their emergency calls, while others feel public safety has been put pushed aside.

Sara Swinney-Rose lives a few blocks away from the now-closed Oakhurst Fire Department.

"I don't know how effective it's going to be having different departments come in. We are here on the county line. Are they going to know who to send?" said Swinney-Rose.

The area has been split up between three neighboring fire departments. But Swinney-Rose is still worried about what will happen when the first fire breaks out.

“With people burning their trash out here, it's a huge safety concern, with this brush and trees and it's definitely a concern,” said Swinney-Rose.

But Tulsa fire Capt. Randy Bercher said people don't need to be concerned.

"I think we will respond faster, because they have to call their firefighters in and we are sitting here ready to go," he said.

Station 26 is 3 miles from the Oakhurst Fire Department.

“Just jump on the highway and we can be there in a few minutes," said Bercher.

But Swinney-Rose said the true test will come when someone in this town has an emergency.
