FOX23 also identified an identify theft ring that targets members of the military.

Staff Sgt. Erik Wolf is a member of the Army National Guard. After spending his life fighting for freedom, he now uses much of his time dealing with scam artists using his identity to dupe people out of thousands of dollars.

He told FOX23 it started with an email from a woman in Spain named ‘Agnes.’

She had met someone claiming to be Wolf.

“She sent me photographs that they had sent her and when I opened up the photos they were me," he said.

“The scammers were posing as me," he said.

The scam artist had developed a romantic relationship with Agnes and pulling on her heart strings, came up with a sob story.

“They had fabricated a story that while I was deployed to Afghanistan my wife had tragically died and I needed money to get back home to my teenage daughter," Wolf said.

Agnes told Wolf she had wired over $3,000 through Western Union thinking she was helping a US soldier get home to his daughter.

She was devastated to realize her new love interest on Facebook and the story about him was a hoax.

Wolf told FOX23 he found over 60 profiles using his identity and his photographs. Wolf said he filed a police report and contacted the FBIbut there wasn't much that could be done.

“Basically what I was told is that there is really nothing they can do to stop them. They believe that these scam artists are a network of individuals working out of either Russia or Nigeria," he said.

Wolf said most of the people who have been scammed in some way or another by these fake profile pages realize he is also a victim as well.
