Muskogee city crews will be working overtime starting Wednesday night to finish preparing the roads for the winter mix on its way.

City employees told FOX23 the key is staying ahead and keeping up with the weather.

FOX23's Price McKeon talked to the county's emergency management and they said they mainly just deal with what they get.

The city's salt and sand mix isn't loaded yet.

"We've been working on it mixing it up, keeping it stirred up," said David Garner, City of Muskogee Public Works Street Supervisor.

But soon it will be scooped up and put into trucks to hit the road.

It is an all hands on deck situation.

"I will be out, too. Checking bridges and checking for slick spots," said Garner.

City officials said they're ready even if the worst forecasts come true.

"We'll have smaller sand trucks out and maybe a couple road graters, if needed, mostly the big trucks will be running,' said Garner.

Starting with bridges then he said they're off to prep major roads.

"That's were the most traffic will be you know if someone needs to get to the stores, medication, medical vehicles, stuff like that matter," said Garner.

He said after midnight plows will be running 24 hours a day and crews will work 12-hour shifts until the weather improves.

"We had a mild winter last year we have a stockpile," he said. He said he's not worried they'll run out.

"Three miles away we have sand plants so if we get low we can get it here quick," he said.

Ready for the worst, but hoping for the best, no icy roads.

"If it gets bad it's going to be bad, you know it's going to be a big deal," said Garner.

Muskogee County Emergency Management said they don't have snow plows, but they do have road graters to break ice.

They have five trucks full of sand salt mix they'll spread on the road once there is an issue.
