A Muskogee police officer was involved in a shooting on Thursday afternoon.

Police officials told FOX23 that officers attempted to stop a suspected stolen vehicle near 4th and Elgin in Muskogee.

"One of the officers that actually took the report spotted the car (and) initiated the traffic stop on that vehicle," said Cpl. Michael Mahan with Muskogee police.

There were three people inside the vehicle.

Mahan said that initial officer had backup. It was the second officer who found himself in a scuffle.

"The backing officer went to take one of the passengers into custody, it appears there was a struggle that ensued, and he tried to disarm him. He was subsequently shot by the other officer," said Mahan.

The passenger who tried to take the gun from the officer was shot in the chest or abdomen area. He was taken to East Star West Hospital while the driver and other passenger were taken into custody.

"It appeared in this case he was going to disarm that officer and probably try to use that weapon against one of our guys and they responded according to how they were trained to respond," said Mahan.

The officers involved are being questioned and placed on administrative leave.

"It would appear at least from our initial investigation it looks like it was justifiable deal," said Mahan.

None of the officers were seriously injured. The names of the people in the stolen vehicle and the names of the officers have not been released.

Sure, Lets keep the cops identity a secret so the media cant see if he has done this before (or has been disciplined for excessive force).

The over-used "he tried to grab my gun" excuse. I wonder if the dashcam video will back up that story? It's public record, but will they try to keep it secret?

That ain't like grabbing your playmates cap gun. It's still early but I'd nominate this guy for dumb ass of the year.
