Thieves stole thousands of dollars' worth of copper from a Muskogee man.

FOX23 learned thieves stole air-conditioner units from two properties near the Arrowhead Mall.

Lynnwood Wade said more than $6,000 worth of copper is missing from his rental property but he said thieves are not just targeting this place.

"They broke all the tubing, all the wire and took my unit," said Wade.

"It's just devastating, devastating. You know I ask myself you go fight for a country and you come back and it's harder to live in than what you fought for than it was when you left," he said.

But instead of working at renting the properties he's working to protect them because he says thieves keep hitting, even just yesterday.

"And I looked and seen that wire hanging and I said 'oh no,' I looked down and my unit was gone I said 'oh no' and I walked around and I see all this done," he said.

Thieves left behind insulation thrown on the ground, missing electrical covers.

"Just to replace that copper and have it redone and everything is going to kill me," he said.

He boarded up the small space with special screws to keep thieves from going under his house and ripping wiring out.

Wade said he's about to give up renting because he just can't control the break-ins.

The truly sad irony of these kinds of thefts is that stealing copper and finding some scummy place to fence it is actually a lot of work...probably almost as much as an actual job considering how much of a 'discount' they will have to take. An honest scrap yard won't touch the stuff and the crooked ones won't give them more than a few cents on the dollar of what copper is actually worth. They will probably make enough to brew up a batch of crystal meth, though...and that's as far as they can see into the future.
