Muskogee Mall Reconsiders Security After Fatal Shooting

MUSKOGEE, OK - The parking lot, nearly empty, the day after a fatal shooting at Muskogee's Arrowhead Mall.

Muskogee Police responded to the call Saturday around 4 P.M.  According to Cpl. Pedro Zardeneta, three suspected shooters opened fire, injuring six people, killing one teen.

The mall's manager, Scott Stephenson told FOX23 the mall will be closed Sunday except for the anchor stores: Dillard's, JCPenney, Stage, and Sears, which will close at 6 PM. 

All stores in the mall will resume normal hours of operation Monday morning. 7 AM - main doors, 10 AM - retailers.

Employees will attend a meeting Monday to review a plan of safety, prior to the mall re-opening.

The mall released this statement Sunday in response to the incident:

"Saturday’s tragedy in our great city has been a shattering event for the entire community. Arrowhead Mall’s number one priority has been and will always be to ensure the safety and well-being of our shoppers and mall employees. We are extremely grateful for the quick response by local law enforcement agencies on this investigation. Arrowhead Mall is fully cooperating with law enforcement investigators and has provided information regarding this incident.

Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to the victims of this tragedy and their loved ones. During this time, Arrowhead Mall is taking precautionary steps to provide additional security for our loyal shoppers and employees and reinforce our commitment for providing a safe and friendly shopping environment."

Cpt. Zardeneta did confirm officers will be on bike patrol in the mall parking lot starting Monday.

this is a start, but please do more, for the safety of the employees and shoppers. this is a great mall and a great town

Actually the bicycle patrols would be a first line of defense, hopefully to spot and deter trouble before it gets inside. They did it at a mall in NY and crime dropped significantly. On the hand, if you have idiots who want to do stupid crap, they will find a way.

Let me get this straight. The shooting was inside the Mall? So you are going to have bicycle patrols in the parking lots? OK, I really feel safe now.
