UPDATE: Muskogee police say Dondray Fowler has been charged with first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Michael Mayberry had previously been charged with first-degree murder but, that charge may soon be dropped. This comes after police discovered the gun they believe was used in the deadly Arrowhead Mall shooting.
(MUSKOGEE, OK) --More arrests in deadly mall shooting in Muskogee over the weekend. Twenty-five-year-old Tenesha Nunley and 24-year old Augusta Parker are each charged with harboring a fugitive. Meanwhile, Anton Nelson and Dondray Fowler are each charged with complaint of accessory to murder and five counts of shooting with intent to kill. Michael Mayberry was arrested on first-degree murder charges, five counts of shooting with intent to kill, and a warrant for assault with a deadly weapon. And Daniel Anderson is also in custody, charged in another crime. As Fox 23’s Douglas Clark reports, family members of the victim don’t believe the shooting was gang-related.
Muskogee Police say they don’t know if Jarrod Reed was the intended target. But they know it was either him or someone he was with who was also shot. But family members say the incident was not an act of gang violence.
“It’s kind of messed up, how it happened and everything,” says Sam Reed, Jarrod’s cousin.
Jarrod Reed was gunned down at the Arrowhead Mall in Muskogee Saturday. While he believes the shooter knew Jarrod, he’s not buying cops’ story that the shooting was dispute between rival gang members.
“We’re just cousins. People are looking at it like it’s a gang because of the situation that occurred,” says Reed. “We’re just family here. We all stick together. We’re tight.”
While Muskogee Police can’t say for sure whether the suspects and victims were in a gang or just associated with gang members, they are confident the incident was gang-related.
“We have cases going back a few years of these two groups having skirmishes back and forth. So we know this is connected to that – a northside gang and a southside gang,” says Muskogee Police Cpl. Pedro Zardeneta. “We call it a gang. Any group of people that are involved in criminal activity fits all the profiles of a gang. So we’re classifying it as a gang.”
Whether gang-related or not, family members of Jarrod Reed are now remembering the times they had with him.
“He was cool dude. He wasn’t a bad person,” says Sam Reed. “He didn’t deserve that at all. I never will forget about this day. Never.”
Police are still looking for several other persons of interest and more arrests could come.
Meanwhile, Muskogee Police are working with the Arrowhead Mall to help improve the response to incidents like Saturday’s shooting. The mall is considering beefing-up security by improving surveillance, putting more guards on duty, and creating a “call list” to notify customers and store clerks when the area is secure.
There will be a town meeting and prayer vigil Tuesday night to mourn the loss of Reed and raise awareness about gang violence. It will be held at the Macedonia Baptist Church at 7:30pm.
