A woman in west Tulsa County has a lot of explaining to do after she reportedly spanked her five year old son with a chip bag from the trash that had glass inside.
Alicia Anne Croney reportedly told investigators her son got in trouble because he wouldn’t stop playing X-Box. Investigators say her story just doesn’t add up though.
When Alicia Croney left her home on Sunday to take her son the hospital, doctors noticed cuts on his legs. They asked her how he had received those cuts and she told them she had spanked him with a Doritos bag, and later noticed shards of glass from a shrimp jar inside that bag.
“That someone would spank someone with a Doritos bag is highly unlikely. Not that it didn't happen, but it seems like of all things that you would have at your disposal in your home, a Doritos bag…I'm just not finding the relevance as far as how that would discipline a child,” says Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office Major, Shannon Clark.
According to her arrest report, her son started bleeding from both of his legs. Once they got to Hillcrest Hospital, the cuts were deep enough that the five year old boy needed surgery.
FOX23 went to the Croney home to try and talk with a family member but after knocking on the door, there was no answer despite numerous cars in the driveway and a lawyer’s truck parked out front.
Neighbor Tim White lives just a few houses down from Alicia Croney’s home.
He was shocked to hear about the little boy’s injuries.
"That's real heartbreaking and that's not something you want to hear,” says White.
His wife owns a local daycare in Mannford, and is trained on how to spot signs of child abuse.
"She deals with Head Start and DHS all the time so she's quite familiar with all of that,” says White.
We did some checking into Alecia Croney’s background, but all she has in Tulsa County are a few traffic violations. Her bond is set at $50,000. Croney was booked in the Tulsa County jail on a complaint of child abuse.
ER doctors told the deputy they felt it was abuse because it would take force to make wounds that deep. They say the five-year old had a deep cut to his upper part of his right knee and a minor cut to his left inner thigh. Doctors say he will have to have surgery on both wounds.
