UPDATE: 13 of 17 dogs that went missing from a suspected puppy mill-- are now safe at SPCA shelter in Tulsa. The dogs disappeared last week when animal cruelty investigators went to collect them, near Turley from a woman who had agreed to hand them over.
The SPCA says since FOX23 aired the story last week, people turned over the 13 dogs although 4 are still missing.
Most of the dogs are in pretty bad shape suffering from mange and infections. The SPCA says people can view the dogs, if they're interested in adopting, but they won't be available for adoption, until a vet is able to "treat them and clear them for their new homes. If you're interested in adopting, the SPCA can be reached at 428-7722.
Story from November 5th:
SPCA Animal Cruelty investigators received an anoynmous tip about a puppy mill near Turley. Wednesday, 19 dogs were discovered in poor condition. They were found on an elderly woman's property. However, SPCA was only able to rescue two dogs, because the woman had someone come pick up the other 17 dogs. SPCA is currently in the process of tracking down the rest of the animals.
"A lot of time with these puppy mills, these aren't pets, they're property, so people will deal with them not in a loving nurturing environment," SPCA's Marcy Spence said.
SPCA spoke with the landowner Thursday morning, but she hung up the phone without giving an address. They say their first priority is locating those 17 animals.
"Now it's a matter of tracking that individual down. Prosecution aside, what we really care about is the state these dogs are in, it's they who need attention," Spence said.
The SPCA says the dogs are suffering from mange, bad diet and infections, and they might end up in another puppy mill. The SPCA also said the reason behind puppy mills is money, they breed as many dogs and try to make the most profit from them.
