Police said burglars aren't just targeting items inside homes  -- some are grabbing items outside of houses in midtown Tulsa, and one homeowner caught a suspected burglar in the act.

On the Tulsa Midtown Alert Neighbors Facebook page there have been several reports of break-ins in the last couple days. One post was a bit different than the rest. It said their dog found a man hiding in their back yard with copper.

Police said this happens too often. A thief will break into an AC unit, take the copper inside and sell it. FOX23 spoke with neighbors i in Midtown and they're uneasy about this happening so close to where they live.

"It feels more vulnerable for my mother who is elderly (and) who lives alone," said neighbor Mindy Moore.

A few other neighbors who didn't talk on camera said they're worried about their units sitting out in the open.

Moore has heard of this crime of opportunity before.

"The thief got $30 worth of copper and I have to replace a $3,000 AC unit," said Moore.

Moore also thinks the lack of police in the area makes her mother's neighborhood a target.

"I can name one time where I've seen a police car drive by the street," said Moore. "We need more of a police presence, very few police cars drive by here."

Police have not found the man in the back yard yet. The Facebook post is encouraging people to double-check their AC units and outdoor plumbing to make sure they haven't been a victim.

Try an advanced tactic towards preventing these types of thefts by placing a dual system that regulates both heat and air conditioning in the attic of the home.
