A McAlester child is recovering from a gun shot wound.

The McAlester police chief told FOX23 the child found an off-duty McAlester police officer’s personal gun and accidentally shot himself on Friday. The child was shot in the stomach and will be fine.

The officer was not at home at the time of the shooting. The Pittsburg County Sheriff and OSBI investigated the shooting as a precaution and ruled it accidental.

Why doesn't he get charged with child endangerment like any other person would. This is another example of a cover up. He needs to be prosecuted like anyone else.

A police officer of all folks should know how to store a gun. Inaccessible. Inoperable. Unloaded. It would seem this officer is untrained or either did not follow his training. Either way he is responsible for this shooting. He was negligent, and as a law-enforcement officer shold be held to a higher standard. Minimum month suspension without pay and ordered to undergo gun safety training. This kid could have been killed.
