It was a unique experience for high school at Booker T. Washington High School today. Current Mayor Dewey Bartlett and Mayoral candidate Kathy Taylor fielded their top questions.

It wasn’t just a forum for candidates to share their views, but a chance to reach out to students.

“[To] motivate and inspire students to set long and short term goals,” student organizer Charity Barton told FOX23 News. “They’re motivational speakers who will definitely inspire our kids.”

Mayor Dewey Bartlett and Kathy Taylor took questions about the biggest obstacles in their lives they’ve overcome

“By my 19th birthday I had lost both of my parents,” Taylor shared.

Mayor Bartlett said, “People had a perception that I was some kid who had a silver spoon.”

They were asked by students, preparing to head to college, why they should return to Tulsa.

“Come back and be the change you want to see in the world,” Taylor offered.

“If you really want to create something in your life,” Mayor Bartlett began, “There are great opportunities in Tulsa.”

Then there were the tougher subjects, like improving safety by decreasing crime.

Mayor Bartlett swears by police beat systems, Taylor advocates community based policing.

They were questions about minimizing construction, improving public transportation and speedier cleanup after storms.

But we found out the main purpose was motivation.

As Barton put it, “their dreams and goals and desires for the community, and how hopefully their hometown stories will inspire others to know they were just like us.”

We found out students who were sitting in these that are old enough or will be old enough to vote in November were given voter registration cards in order to help them more easily register for their first election ever.
