Man in custody after overnight shooting death in Tahlequah

Tahlequah police have arrested a man after an overnight shooting death in the area.

Police were called to a shooting in the 200 block of Basin Street at 12:30 a.m.

The SWAT team surrounded and arrested Juan Carlos Caballero after finding the body of an unknown man at the residence.

"We have a SWAT team for cases just like this, their training their expertise probably kept us from having an incident with the suspect," said Tahlequah Police Chief Nate King.

Authorities said Caballero is in the Cherokee County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

King said that the cause of death appears to be a gunshot wound.

According to a release from police, Caballero's girlfriend, Liliana Landaverde, is being held for possession of a controlled substance and failure to protect a minor.

The investigation is ongoing.
