Restoration company crews are cleaning up the damage at Union’s 8th Grade Center.  Lightning from the overnight storm sparked a fire on the roof.  Charlie Bushyhead, Assistant Superintendent, tells FOX23 News, he was afraid to go inside and see the damage, after watching firefighters work to put out the flames.

“The flames were across the entire roof, it looked like the building was going up, but it appears we didn’t lose any furniture, we didn’t lose any computers,” Bushyhead said.

The roof above what they call the “Grand Hall” caught fire.  FOX23 News learned the way the building was designed likely minimized the damage.  There’s a wooden roof with shingles, then beneath it, there’s a metal roof.  The wood and shingles went up in flames overnight, but firefighters told school leaders the metal roof protected everything inside.

Bushyhead says they’ll replace the hallway carpet, because of water damage.  They’ll also replace the roofing that was destroyed.  There’s some painting and touch-ups that are needed as well.

“We’ll get it done,” Bushyhead said.

One week from today the school plans to host the “R U Ready?” event, welcoming the incoming class.  Bushyhead hopes they’ll be able to do that.

He tells FOX23 News that when students report for the first day of school at the 8th Grade Center, on August 19, they’ll have no idea this even happened.
