The American Freedom Law Center filed a motion for summary judgment in federal court in Oklahoma on behalf of a Tulsa police officer suspended for not ordering men to attend an event at a Tulsa mosque.

Captain Paul Fields was suspended in 2011 for refusing an order to instruct his officers to attend a law enforcement appreciation day at a local mosque. Fields was suspended for violating department rules on being obedient and also for conduct unbecoming an officer.

The motion from AFLC argues the undisputed facts demonstrate the City of Tulsa and its senior police officials retaliated against Captain Field for exercising his constitutional right to the free exercise of religion.

It's not about bigotry or hate. It's about faith. We are fast becoming a nation that kowtows to anyone who whines loud enough. The police department should have conducted this meeting on neutral ground where the Captain could have had the opportunity to meet with mosque officials. If the Captain were an Atheist do you think he would want to enter any house of religion? Not in this country. We complain about the separation of church and state, but have no issue ordering police officers (at taxpayer expense) to attend a meeting in a mosque or church. The issue here is education. 9/11 is still very fresh in many peoples minds and we have had it pounded into our heads that radical muslims want nothing more that to kill Infidels. Look at all the Christians who are currently being persecuted and killed in the middle east as you read. It will take time and a willingness to meet somewhere in the middle. This will include muslims accepting and assimilating into American culture. Master Sergeant, US Army Retired

I certainly supprt Capt. Fields, he didn't ban any of his officers from attending, he simply refused to force them to attend an event held in a mosque, after 9/11 I don't see how any American, Chief of Police, Mayor or whatever can prosecute one of their officers for refusing to order his men to ignore their own beliefs and attend a function with a group of people who have sworn to destroy every man woman and child in the world if they do not accept Allah as their God, islam as their religion and sharia as their law....his superiors should be fired, and hang their heads in shame.

Police officers and their superiors are expected to set a good example for the people they serve and protect. I am sickened to know that such bigotry and prejudice exists within our police department. It's bad enough when the ordinary citizen shows such ignorance, but to have TPD be this ignorant is completely unacceptable.
