Road Conditions Update 12-24-09 - 9 p.m.
Driving conditions continue to deteriorate in the eastern part of the state although snow storms have subsided in the western part of the state.

I-40 between US-75 and the Arkansas state line is closed due to low visibility from heavy snow. In addition, US-69 north of the Canadian River in McIntosh County to the Mayes county line also is closed.

Although crews are encouraged by weather improvements in western counties, travel is still discouraged due to blowing show and icy conditions. In far western counties, significant drifting is a problem.

The interstate system in Oklahoma City remains gridlocked by numerous collisions. However, highways remain open in other parts of the state.

Motorists who are stranded in their autos are advised to run the engine intermittently to conserve fuel while keeping warm and to open a window slightly to provide fresh air. Emergency crews report difficulty in reaching stranded motorists and advise that in many cases, rescues will take several hours.

Even though visibility has improved in central and western Oklahoma, wind and blowing snow continue to be a problem. Although ODOT crews will continue to work around the clock until roadways are cleared, a layer of ice under the snow will significantly slow recovery efforts.

Drivers are reminded to stay at least 200 feet behind road-clearing equipment, for both their safety and the safety of the operators. During snow and/or ice conditions, motorists are asked to:
  • Be aware that conditions are continually changing; drive cautiously and for the conditions on the roadway.
  • Check road conditions before getting out on the roads.
  • Allow extra space between vehicles, so there is adequate distance for braking in wet and icy conditions.
  • Stay at least 200 feet behind road-clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
  • Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway, but is actually a thin layer of ice.
  • Please be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time to reach destinations.
