 Help with home heating costs is now available here in Tulsa and across the state. The funding is through  the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This program is administered by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

The application period began December 11. There were about 75 waiting outside the doors before the DHS office in North Tulsa near North Peoria & 36th Street North even opened up. Throughout the morning, hundreds of people showed up to apply despite the 20 degree temperature outside.

The people in line said they all wanted help paying their pricey heating costs.

You will need a form of ID, your most recent heating bill and proof of income to apply. Eligibility is based on a few things: income, assets and the size of your family.

The maximum income guidelines are:

2
$ 1,387
3
$ 1,750
4

The Oklahoma Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will provide residents with grants for winter heating bills, summer cooling, energy crisis, and/or weatherization services and other energy-related home repair assistance to qualified low to moderate income households in the area. Weatherization assistance will help families reduce their energy bills, as the assistance program will install, for free, upgrades to peoples home, such as insulation, new windows, caulking, and more. LIHEAP will provide people with cash grants that can be used to pay utility bills.
