Kiefer Public Schools will close on Friday after a large number of students came down with the flu.

Kiefer school officials say out of the 650 students in Kiefer about 120 of the students are out with the flu. Officials say the school will be closed Friday and they are hoping the bug will run its course over the weekend and students will be back in class on Monday.

“I feel like a lot of the sickness could be stopped and not spread as easily if you keep them home,” said DeDe Reed, a mother of one of the students.

The mother of two told FOX23 with so many students getting sick it means there were kids coming to school sick. Reed says she’s seen it all over Facebook on parents’ statuses saying their child has the flu.

“One child has the flu and is at home but they’re sending the other ones,” Reed said about one of the statuses.

She wishes some of those parents would just leave all their children at home to prevent the flu from spreading.

“We felt like it would be in the best interest of the remaining students to close school tomorrow,” said Kiefer Public Schools Attorney Steve Mathis.

He says they will start cleaning lockers, fountains and desk Thursday after school.

“We hope that Monday we’ll be able to come back fresh and start a new week,” said the attorney.

An effort parents, like Kent Bacon can appreciate.

“We’ve got a son who has an illness. And it’s a little more dangerous to have the flu around him,” said Bacon

“If you or your child is sick stay home and get better,” said Reed.

Health officials say children’s hand hygiene isn’t the best and ask parents to encourage their children to wash their hands as often as possible.
