For anyone who thought recycling is too much of a hassle, now it’s easier than ever if you live in Jenks.

Through the One Cart program there is no extra cost and no more excuses. In a matter of seconds, a week’s worth of trash is dumped into the back of a truck and gone, but now it’s not all headed for the landfill. In Jenks, you can now recycle at no additional cost.

For the last few years, Leah Harper has recycled on her own but is thrilled the City will now do it for her.

"It was inconvenient to have to load up our own recyclables and to haul them into to town to be sorted, so we're excited about the possibility of them doing it curbside,” says Harper.

The trash and recyclables are all taken together with no separate pick up days or carts.

"For someone who has put off recycling or hasn't done it before, I would say give it a try and take the extra step. You'll be surprised how fewer trash bags you'll take out to the curb when you take those big bottles and gallons of milk out of your trash can,” says Harper.

If you plan on taking part in the recycling program, just make sure you put your recyclables at the bottom of your trash can and your bagged trash at the top.
The City is hoping its new One Cart program will encourage people who haven’t recycled to give it a try.

"Newspapers, tin, aluminum, plastics all those things that are listed as recyclables can just go in there loose,” says City Manager, Mike Tinker.

Once all the trash is collected, it’s hauled to the Material Recovery Facility in Tulsa to be sorted and processed.

"This is a really exciting announcement and we appreciate the City looking out for us and giving us some options,” says Harper.

When it comes to recycling, our country still has a long way to go. It’s estimated that every three months, Americans throw away enough aluminum to build our nation’s entire fleet of commercial airliners.

The One Cart Recycling program is in cooperation with American Waste Control, a solid waste management recycler licensed by the City of Jenks.

"We want to make recycling as easy as possible for people," said Mayor Greg Bowman. "We believe our strategy is a good one and will give residents greater access to recycling as well as help make Jenks an even more environmentally friendly city." Mayor Bowman said, "a driving force to achieving curbside recycling in Jenks is Ward 2 City Councilman Lonnie Sims. Sims has long wanted the City to offer more convenient, but at the same time more cost effective, recycling for our residents. Now, his vision is at hand when coupled with the specialized M.e.t. Recycling Center at Elm and "B" Streets."

The trash and recyclables are transported together with no separate pickup days and no separate containers. Then "Mr. Murph,” American Waste Control's recycling automated separator and processing equipment, does the "dirty work."
