The Washington County Correctional Facility found an inmate unresponsive in a holding cell near the booking area around 2:15 Wednesday morning.

The detention staff said they were doing their hourly checks when they found 55-year old Joseph McDonald. The staff entered the cell to find the inmate without a pulse. They immediately began to administer CPR and notify emergency personnel. EMS arrived shortly and the inmate was pronounced deceased.

Based on the investigation at this point it appears the inmate had suffered some sort of medical distress causing his death. The incident is still under investigation. The State Medical Examiner’s office was contacted to assist in the investigation as well as the Oklahoma Department of Health Jail Standards Division.

The name of the individual is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
