Curing cancer one cupcakes at a time; that is the motto of 10-year-old Sydney Wyre from Broken Arrow.
On Sunday, FOX23 interviewed Sydney as she launched her business, Syd's Cupcakes for the Cure. She charges one dollar per cupcake and will donate her earnings towards cancer research.
That small gesture to donate has blossomed.
"It’s crazy and chaos,” said Sydney. In three days cupcake sales have more than doubled. On Sunday, she had raised about $800 and by Wednesday that number was well above $2,000.
Sydney’s mother, Dana, is her baking partner and helped her establish a Facebook business page.
“The past few days we are constantly on facebook and checking it on my phone,” Dana said.
Dana said they’ve received orders and donations from across Oklahoma and other states like Louisiana, Missouri and Arkansas.
Sydney said red velvet is the most popular cupcake flavor, but that isn’t the point of her business. The ten-year-old said she is raising funds to help families who are dealing with cancer and are looking for a cure.
Vanessa Nowland said she understands and applauds Sydney’s efforts because cancer has touched her home.
“About five and a half years ago my sister was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer that has spread to her liver.” Vanessa said every day has been a battle for survival but she calls her sister a survivor.
Vanessa said any amount of money that can be raised through Sydney’s cupcake sales will not be in vain.
“It’s just incredible that a 10-year-old who we think of as just a child, is thinking beyond herself and how she can help other people,” Vanessa said, “Everything she is doing is going to make a difference.”
Sydney said she has met numerous people and customers, like Vanessa, who have been touched by cancer.
“It’s a lot and it’s kind of sad sometimes to see what they’ve gone through,” Sydney said. She said she continues to bake because it is the best way that she knows how to help raise money.
When asked what makes her cupcakes taste so good Sydney responded by saying, “love.”
It’s the extra addition in the batter that she hopes will inspire others to give.
Sydney’s goal is raise $5,000 dollars by Dance for a Cure in January. You can "LIKE" her on Facebook.
