Three new hotels are set to be built on Route 66 in Claremore.
On Thursday, in the State of the City address, Claremore announced the construction of the three hotels and a conference center.
"This is the start of something big," said Jim Thomas, Claremore city manager.
Thomas told FOX23 they're lacking hotels to go with Rogers State University, several large corporations and a busy downtown.
"When people are traveling, they want a place to stay at night, do some shopping, you know let the kids enjoy some activities and then get back on the road," said Thomas.
Construction on a La Quinta Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Hampton Inn will begin within the next 45 days.
Combined, there will be 250 new hotel rooms and a conference center will adjoin the Holiday Inn Express.
"People were having to stay in the City of Tulsa or they were going over to Owasso," Thomas said.
Thomas said the city and local businesses have been missing out on tourism and potential sales tax dollars because people are staying elsewhere.
Store owner Donna Melton agrees.
"I think the more the town will grow, the more people will stay and then the money will stay in Claremore instead of taking it someplace else," said Melton.
