36-year-old Terrance Jones was found shot dead Sunday morning in the front yard of a family’s home in the 3500 block East Ute Street. The family was on their way out of their house and saw the body. Neighbors later told police they heard six or seven gunshots the night before around 10:00p.m. Police say Jones had several gunshot wounds in his back.
“You hear it all the time on the news,” says neighbor Dennis Harlien. “Didn't think it would happen to me. Didn't think it would happen in my neighborhood. But it has it happened right here in my neighborhood. Just down the street a couple of houses.”
Neighbors couldn’t tear their eyes away from the scene.
"I’m scared you know,” says another neighbor, Mercedes Bela. “I don't know what's going on in Tulsa. I don't know what happened.”
“A gentleman ending up in your yard like that,” says Harlien. “It might be my yard next time. How would my kids react coming out and seeing that?”
Dennis Harlien has lived here for ten years. He's scene crime here before, but nothing this close to his house.
“What's going on here in my neighborhood? I’ve got children,” says Harlien.
“It's danger in the day and danger in the night,” says Bela. “So we're scared."
After the scene cleared children played outside which made Harlien even more concerned.
“It makes me wonder, it really makes me worry,” says Harlien. “If that's happening already here, how much worse could it get? You think, wow, what's it coming to?”
Polilce do not have any leads. They think this might have started as a robbery.
Late Sunday, police recovered Jones' stolen SUV, a 2007 maroon Ford Explorer, a few blocks from the scene. It is being processed for forensics. If you have any information call Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS.
This is Tulsa’s 43rd homicide this year.
