Police said the owner of an SUV shot a man he suspected of burglary, leaving the man hospitalized. The shooting happened near 31st Street and Highway 169 around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

FOX23's Ian Silver was in the area and spoke with the homeowner, John Becker. Becker shot the man he believed had broken into his SUV. He says a recent string of burglaries in the neighborhood is why he brought the gun out in the first place.

Becker was still in shock that he had to shoot someone, but he doesn't regret it.

”Scary: we've had numerous vehicle break-ins. Two nights ago, someone broke into my neighbor's house across the street, and it looks like the same guy tonight because he had the same clothing," said Becker.

Tulsa police downplayed crime in the area.

"This neighborhood's a quiet neighborhood. There's no really high crime rate in this neighborhood. This individual doesn't live over here. I think it was just a random," (reporter hasn't provided the interview subject's name)

Becker disagrees.

"That's kind of the reason I can't sleep at night, because I fear for my property and my family," said Becker.

Heather Grabach lives up the block and says there have been other burglaries, too.

"One across the street," said Grabach. "I came home one night, and her father came over and asked me if I'd seen anything."

As a mother of a 4-year-old, it concerned her.

“A little bit, but my boyfriend's ex-military and we both own guns," said Grabach.

They've also changed their locks, and she doesn't blame Becker for taking drastic measures to protect his property and family with everything going on lately.

"A couple nights ago, I heard a couple of gunshots," said Becker.

And while it's something he wishes he didn't have to do, Becker hopes the shooting will make burglars think twice about striking in the area again.

"I think that I did the right thing, and for anybody else who wants to break into vehicles, that's the chance you take," said Becker.
