TULSA, OK - A man was struck and killed Sunday night while pushing a stalled car along a dark highway.

Tulsa Police report the car did not have emergency lights turned on.

The highway lights near 244 and Highway 75 were not on when the collision happened.

A contractor for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) requested the city turn off the lights while workers complete construction projects along that stretch of the IDL.

The city says the lights along that stretch of the IDL are not a part of the cost-saving budgetary measures.

"I know it's a priority for both the Mayor and Council to get the lights turned back on," Jeff Mulder, City of Tulsa Director of Transportation said.

ODOT says the lights will be turned on certain stretches of the highway as projects are completed.

Meanwhile, the Mayor has proposed some revenue enhancements to turn the lights back on.

Some drivers are complaining they've been in the dark way too long.

"People are already terrible drivers and they're making it more of a disadvantage for everyone it seems," Tulsan Matt Coquette said.

Coquette has experienced a few close calls, nearly side-swiping cars in the dark on the highway.

"We need them (lights) back on please."

Lets ignore the dozens of accidents just like this in areas that still have expressway lights on, and focus on the one accident that occurred in the nearly one year that these lights were out. Yeah, right. This is a red herring.

Even thought the boneheaded city management refuses to pay the bill, It's obvious the person was going to fast for the conditions present.
