The Highway 151 bridge over the Keystone Dam is being closed and replaced, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced Monday.

The said the bridge will close Oct. 28 and could be closed up to 13 months.

Detours will be marked. The longest detour would add an extra 18 miles to get to the other side.

Travis Miller is chief park ranger for the U.S. Army Corp of engineers at Keystone Lake.

He said, “I’m not sure whether I’m going swim, get a kayak or what.”

Miller said he will have to drive the 18 miles to get to work.

He said, “It looks like we'll be traveling out of the way to get to work.”

Not only will the extra 18-mile detour make it harder to get to work, once at work he has another obstacle with the bridge closed.

He said, “The office being on the north side of the lake, the north side of the river, and having a lot of parks on the south side and the north side as well, it’ll be tough to get to some of them.”

FOX23 got a look under the aging bridge Monday.
Concrete chunks are missing. The steel rods have lost their spring and those are two reasons the engineers said the 50-year-old bridge needs to be replaced.
Engineer Daniel Morales said, "Its condition has worsened."

Engineer Adam Smith said, "The bridge has reached the end of its useful life."
Both U.S. Army Corps engineers said it's going to need more than a quick fix.

Smith said, "There's only so many times you know you can fix it with Band-Aids; you got to fix it full depth."
Starting Oct. 28 the bridge at Highway 151 will be closed for construction.
Until then, engineers said drivers should not worry about using the bridge.

Morales said, "This bridge is actually inspected on a more frequent basis to ensure that safety is still there."

Engineers say the project make take up to 13 months, which would be in November, 2014.
