Police, firefighters and hazmat crews are on the scene of a chemical spill near Sapulpa.

Just after 7p.m. Thursday, crews got the call of a nitric acid spill outside Sulzer Chemtech.  The building is located near I-44 and W. 61st Street.

Nitric acid is a highly corrosive strong mineral acid.

At this time, crews have evacuated homes and businesses that are a half mile out from the Sulzer building.

First responders are trying to treat the spill with water.  They are also digging up containment pits to keep the contaminated runoff from going anywhere.
