The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office says that they have been inundated with people applying for hand gun licenses.
Major Shannon Clark with the Tulsa County Sheriff’s office says the increase could be attributed to a variety of factors including discussions of gun restrictions and protection measures. Major Clark says that records clerks with the Sheriff’s Office have been working diligently to keep up with the influx in demand and are doing an exemplary job.
“The records department is processing somewhere between 40 and 60 applications per day,” said Major Clark, “In an agency our size that is significant.”
Licensing a handgun follows firearm training. Major Clark says applicants must then submit a photo, fingerprints, a background check and a money order during the licensing process. The information is then submitted to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for background checks.
Records Clerk, Jason Carter, tells FOX23 staffing isn’t an issue. He says the office is waiting for another fingerprinting machine which he hopes will help expedite the application process.
“From the paperwork to the finished product the whole process takes 20 minutes at the most,” said Carter.
Carter says that the busiest days are Monday and Friday during the lunch hour. Carter says for the time being, he encourages applicants to be patient during the process.
