Gusty winds caused a major accident that jammed up traffic on Interstate 244 on Thursday morning.
Wind caught a trailer as the driver was on northbound on ramp from Highway 169 to westbound I-244 and blew the trailer over.
“It’s like flying a kite, you know. I've had them flip up on me, but I haven't flipped them over,” said Kevin Farr.
He drives mobile homes. He said it's easy to underestimate the speed and strength of wind., "especially heading out west. If you have a bridge and stuff, there’s a big gust that comes out of them culverts."
That's what police say happened out around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Officers discovered a pickup truck that had been towing a large trailer flipped over in the roadway on the overpass.
They had to shut down traffic on I-244 to get the driver to the hospital and clean the debris.
“Just be aware of the situation the gusts are upwards to 50 mph. If you are pulling a trailer or something big it could be hazardous,” said Farr.
His biggest concern isn't other truckers, its regular vehicle motorists.
“They're in a hurry to get there, they're not paying attention to what kind of loads they're getting ready to pass and stuff and they're the ones that we worry about,” he said.
His solution is simple, “I do a lot of praying.”
The driver did not sustain life-threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition and is expected to get out Thursday.
