Folks in Okmulgee have been clutching their guns a bit tighter.
Some say they had heard city officials were going against the state's new open carry law.
City officials insist, that's not the case.
Several Okmulgee citizens sat in on a city council meeting Tuesday. They demanded answers from city leaders regarding why the change, how they'll be affected, and why now?
"Makes no sense at all," said Candie Apple.
"I don't like it at all," said war vet, Danny Medley.
The group is upset with city leaders, because of a new ordinance. In it, the language calls to get rid of prohibition against handguns.
"You need to read the ordinance. You need to look at it," said City Manager Bob Baxter.
Baxter says not enough people did that, he say that's why they're confused.
Baxter told FOX23 much of the language in the ordinance is outdated, so in Tuesday's meeting he and other city leaders agreed to fix it.
They also agreed to do it with an emergency order. That added more confusion for folks like Medley.
"They're going to take away our rights and declare it an emergency," said Medley.
"If you don't do an emergency, you have to publish the ordinance in its entirety and you'll have to wait 30 days," said Baxter.
Really, the change lines Okmulgee up with Oklahoma's new open carry law.
It prevents towns from passing their own handgun ordinances.
There are weapons that are illegal in Okmulgee: Bowie knives, daggers, dirks and brass knuckles, unless they're used in the line of duty.
