(Monday, December 16, 2008 5:00 pm by Kaci Christian, FOX23.com, Tulsa OK) – Salvation Army, Goodwill, Red Cross, John 3:16 Mission—just a sampling of area charities telling us that more and more people are in need of assistance with the basics: shelter, food and clothing. FOX 23’s Kaci Christian shows us how charities are struggling to provide more, with less.
“Here we are, in the midst of the holiday season, and yet our national economy is struggling,” reports FOX 23’s Kaci Christian. “You may be having a hard time making ends meet. Area charities tell me they’re facing a serious challenge: demand for services is up, and donations are down.”
Bill Hinkle’s mother-in-law is dying. She recently turned 87, and had been in the hospital. The family was considering taking her to a nursing home for her final days, when someone at the hospital urged Hinkle to consider Clarehouse as an option. He’d never heard of the midtown facility and was skeptical, but says once he and his wife visited, they knew it was the perfect place. Hinkle submitted an application for consideration, and his mother-in-law was accepted as a guest at Clarehouse.
“They need help,” Hinkle says earnestly. “They’re a great nonprofit organization that people just don’t know about.”
Clarehouse is a charitable organization offering a place where dying people can spend their final days.
“It’s funded entirely by private donations, and there’s no cost for the, ah, patient,” adds Hinkle. “Comes a time that, um, the transition, or the passing, is going to come, and you just want to make it as nice for your family member as you can.”
