Early Monday FOX23 told you about the sporadic grass fires in Osage

Later that evening FOX23 spoke with the fire crew at the Turley Fire Department to check what fires they've had to put out today.

"With the conditions right now, it is very easy for a small controlled fire to get out of hand," said Assistant Fire Chief Ben Hatcher.

That's exactly what has been happening these past few days.

"We've seen a rise in the number of grass fires the past couple days," Hatcher said, which explains why Tulsa and surrounding counties have been under high fire danger warning.

FOX23 was on scene during a fire that started out in a wooded area Monday afternoon.

"It was under control I'd say within about 30 to 45 minutes," said Hatcher.

Right after FOX23's interview with the assistant chief, the firefighters were called to another grass fire right around the block from the fire station.

Hatcher says everything is igniting quickly so he urges caution.

"Make sure you have a water source, make sure you talk to your local fire department and make sure you're doing everything legally," said Hatcher.

The Turley fire station works with volunteer firefighters and has responded to 12 grass fires in the last 48 hours, which they tell us is unusual for their district.

"It's pretty high for us. We normally, we average one to three calls per day," said Hatcher.

He explained once they put their gear up from one fire, they are called right back out to another.

"It spreads us thin," said Hatcher.

During FOX23's interview they were called to 12 fires.

"With these big trucks, they don't get very good gas mileage. And when they're out there running the pumps for, you know, hours at a time, it really eats up the fuel," said Hatcher.

But at the end of the day they say lives and homes are their No. 1 priority.
