Leroy Welch's granddaughter said she was driving to get gas and saw her grandfather walking on the road. When she asked if he wanted a ride, he said no. About 20 minutes later he was dead.
FOX23 was there when police inspected the car that hit Leroy Welch as he was walking on Highway 69. Police say that after being hit by the car, at least three semi-trucks hit him.
His granddaughter, Tina Argo, told FOX23 "He always like picking up cans and stuff because he liked being outside."
She told FOX23 that stress from the incident caused her father to have a stroke.
"I can't lose my grandpa then lose my dad too," Argo told FOX23.
Argo is caring for her father while trying to figure out how she's going to pay for her grandfather's funeral.
Police told FOX23 no charges have been filed against the driver.
As for the Welch family, they say they're just trying to afford a funeral.
